Intimacy benefits from cinematographer Eric Gautier's brilliant use of a handheld camera and imaginative wide-screen compositions. The threat of bathos is also kept at bay by the assured performances. A film with a few floundering moments that becomes a powerful description of what it means to be intimate.
Come Undone ends with less than a proper gut-punch of cumulative effect, but this self-consciously modern movie contains classical pleasures. A sensitive anatomy of a sexual affair by Silvio Soldini, one of Italy's most gifted directors. The outcome is of little surprise, but to Soldini's credit, the predictability is no hindrance to enjoying "Come Undone."
The resulting interplay of ruthless restraint and unavoidable passion, plus the film's refusal to shrink from depicting the inevitable horrors of physical deterioration, is devastating. This movie has some heartbreaking moments and is moving, but on the lighter side, it is also somehow reassuring that we are never alone. Amour treats the subject of love in a manner that has seldom before been visited on screen.
Sex and Lucia
It's a thoughtful film that forces its characters and its viewers to wrestle with the difference between great sex and true intimacy. While it's being the told, the story of Sex And Lucia is sufficiently seductive to keep you from noticing the holes forming in its universe. A bizarre, alternately joyful and gloomy take on sexual fantasies and complications.
What the movie lacks visually, it makes up for with the performances, especially by Lindon, who leads us on a journey we want to stick with even if we can't fully understand. Those looking for a good thriller should be pleased enough and those seeking a serious art film will get plenty of philosophy with their pretty pictures.
